Update from the Chairman

Dear Members and Friends

It is some time since I wrote to you all with an update on how things are progressing at Newstead, from the point of view of NAP, so please accept my apologies.

Strange as it may seem, we were due to hold a Trustee meeting on 23 March, the day that lockdown was ordered. Suffice to say the meeting did not take place, but was eventually re-scheduled for July 6th. At this later meeting, we were able to have a catch up on different elements of interest.

As you might expect, there has not been a great deal of actual work accomplished, though this does not mean that things have not been going on behind the scenes.

House Re-Opening

A number of NAP members have been volunteering their time and green skills to help get the gardens into shape and the House ready for opening on August 1st– so many thanks to them.

These are the items that we have been working on or are still planning to organise, though we do not have agreed dates yet.

Governance

After more than a year of trying NAP formally became a Registered Charity – 1188392. This will help us with fund raising and give us greater credence with potential sponsors and funders.

Byronathon

The ‘Taster Byronathon’ which was planned for May 2nd was cancelled, which was a great disappointment as David Newport and colleagues had put in a tremendous amount of work in regard to the organisation of the day, the involvement of volunteers, raising new grant funds.

We still want to go ahead with this, and it is really heartening to know that the volunteers want to offer their time, knowledge and experience. We just do not know when we will be able to put this on – possibly later this autumn, or, as is increasingly  likely, spring 2021. We will keep you posted.

West Front

The main works to the West Front have been completed and they look really great. While these  were being  finished off, some remains of an earlier building beneath the front steps were unearthed.  This was a rather exciting discovery, which required further archaeological work to be carried out to understand exactly what was found

Best Regards

Patrick
